SILENT SOLILOQUY - 6 September – 6 October 2007
TamarindArt was founded by Marguerite & Kent Charugundla who have been collecting art since
1994. Beginning with mostly European works, they expanded their interests to Indian contemporary art in 1998 by purchasing paintings by senior Indian artists. With educational and professional expertise in chemistry, real estate, engineering, and the telecommunication industry, their passion for Indian art has always remained strong. The Charugundlas and their dedicated professional staff with over fifty years of combined experience in the art field are committed to the promotion of contemporary Indian art.
In winter of 2006 when Tamarind Art Gallery showcased Kamal Mitra through a group show, Mitra took the New York art scene with a storm. An introvert by nature, Mitra mesmerized the audience by painting in situ at the opening reception. Guests crowded around his easel as images began to appear from the blank, white canvas. This Fall, to the delight of his admirers, collectors and art lovers, Mitra is going solo at Tamarind Art.
What make Mitra’s paintings so conspicuously striking from his contemporaries is his very detailed style and the hypnotic gaze of the protagonist alluring the viewer to enter into his paintings. In Mitra’s paintings the male body plays a vital role, but it is the portrayal of the body by implication rather than mere imitation, which makes these paintings so palpable. We are delighted to announce the opening of Silent Soliloquy, a solo exhibition of paintings by Kamal Mitra on 6 September 2007.
